- Datacenters using over 10 megawatts must undergo mandatory EIA
- Authorities warned not to delay regulations and let projects slip through
Mr. Weerayut from the Economic Development Committee has called on the datacenter board to urgently mandate environmental impact assessments, or EIAs, for all datacenter facilities that consume more than 10 megawatts of electricity, warning against any delays that could result in unregulated operations.
This push comes amid the rapid expansion of the data center industry in Thailand, which demands immense electrical power and water resources. The committee emphasizes that strict environmental oversight is crucial to prevent long-term negative impacts on local communities and the national power grid infrastructure.

Requiring an EIA for large-scale datacenters exceeding 10 megawatts represents a critical turning point in balancing digital economic growth with environmental protection. Because datacenters operate 24/7 and require massive cooling systems consuming significant water resources, such regulations ensure nearby communities are protected from potential thermal and noise pollution.
The committee reiterated that establishing these clear regulatory criteria must happen swiftly and transparently to build public trust while preparing for substantial foreign investments slated to establish datacenter hubs in Thailand in the near future.
