In response, the European Union has put forward a proposal for Canada to become its very first "associate member." The proposed framework aims to establish a beacon for democratic allies rather than a rival power bloc. Officials emphasized that the arrangement centers on sovereignty and mutual autonomy. Canada, for instance, could supply liquefied natural gas and hydrogen to bolster European energy security, while simultaneously benefiting from Europe's advanced expertise in clean-energy technologies.
The concept of an EU associate member represents an entirely novel institutional status that does not currently exist within the bloc's legal framework. Consequently, full implementation could take years and requires unanimous ratification from all 27 EU member states.
