- Secures $100 million in first outside funding from Silversmith Capital Partners
- Intensifies focus on physical AI and proprietary business models
Four years ago, a specialized startup laboratory launched with a hybrid model that operated differently from a traditional incubator, accelerator program, or venture capital firm. Initially known as UP.Labs, the firm focused on building new companies designed to solve specific challenges for corporate giants such as Alaska Airlines and Porsche, alongside broader market ventures.
The firm has now rebranded as Vantora and secured a $100 million investment from Silversmith Capital Partners, marking its very first outside funding round. While continuing its collaboration with established partners, Vantora is also working with undisclosed new clients in the industrial manufacturing and oil and gas sectors.
This corporate evolution has driven Vantora's strategic shift toward building startups exclusively for its corporate partners rather than pursuing the broader consumer market. According to Kuolt, this structural change allows the firm to tackle sensitive concepts that previously would have been shelved.

"They said there is no way you can take this out to the world, and so we passed on it."

A prime example involves an AI initiative developed for partner J.B. Hunt. Kuolt noted that proprietary ownership models now empower Vantora to successfully pursue such high-sensitivity projects directly inside corporate parameters rather than abandoning them.
The transition toward corporate-exclusive physical AI highlights a broader industry trend where venture builders move away from generalized software toward hardware-software integration for heavy industries. Securing $100 million in institutional backing provides Vantora with the necessary capital runway to prototype complex, high-stakes industrial automation solutions safely.
Since launching in 2022 with Porsche as its inaugural corporate partner, Vantora has established multiple startups for the automaker and struck agreements with Alaska Airlines, J.B. Hunt, Wabash, and TDG, the parent company of Ashley Furniture. Although UP.Labs previously shared office space with California-based venture firm Up.Partners, Vantora operates as a fully independent entity.
