Architecture studio Facha architekti has completed 'The Box in the Barn', a compact dwelling inserted neatly inside an existing historic agricultural structure in the Czech Republic. The new volume takes the shape of a straightforward timber structure completely enveloped in a black asphalt facade. Its geometry deliberately mirrors the proportions of the original barn, generating a striking visual and material contrast between the modern insertion and the historic shell.
Positioned slightly elevated from the original barn floor, the new volume allows the historical surface to run continuously underneath it, physically reinforcing the division between the two architectural layers. Furthermore, the enclosing barn acts as a functional climatic buffer, shielding the inner living quarters from overheating and harsh weather conditions.

The spatial layout is dictated by a visual axis cutting straight through the barn's open threshing floor toward a garden filled with old apple trees and the open countryside. This orientation directly informs the placement of a large panoramic window and the dining table, establishing an uninterrupted dialogue between the interior, the open barn, and the distant landscape. Just outside the dwelling, a concrete slab extends seamlessly from the courtyard to create a fluid transitional zone between the exterior, the covered barn space, and the home's interior.
The strategy of adaptive reuse—inserting contemporary living spaces into existing agricultural architecture—has become a vital approach in modern sustainable design. By utilizing the outer historic barn as a protective climatic skin, the architects successfully leverage passive environmental control principles while preserving the vernacular heritage of the rural site.
Inside, the design team applied a restrained material and formal language. Birch plywood serves as the primary palette, paired with black-dyed MDF used for a custom built-in volume housing the kitchen, bathroom, and storage spaces. Minimal architectural interventions combined with exposed natural materials define the compact interior while preserving a transparent relationship with the outer timber frame.
The dwelling is built using a lightweight timber frame system with KVH beams and a vapor-open assembly. Although primarily intended for seasonal getaways, the incorporation of insulation and underfloor heating ensures the unit remains fully functional throughout the year. The protective outer barn further enhances the thermal performance and environmental defense of the inserted home.
