A Liberal Democrat council leader has warned that the party is sleepwalking into irrelevance under the leadership of Sir Ed Davey, questioning whether he remains the right person for the job. Julian Brazil made the remarks as party members and members of parliament gathered for their annual conference in Brighton, noting that similar concerns are being echoed privately by some Lib Dem MPs.
Ahead of the conference, South Cotswolds MP Roz Savage wrote an essay questioning why the party is struggling for relevance at a time when many citizens feel powerless. Meanwhile, pollster Luke Tryl, executive director of More in Common, spoke at a fringe meeting to state that the Lib Dems are failing to cut through nationally and urgently need a more compelling message.

Sir Ed Davey directly addressed these criticisms during a conference question-and-answer session, praising Brazil as a good councillor and highlighting the party's progress in Devon, where they hold six MPs and control multiple local councils.
"We are the most united party in Westminster and with Ed as leader we will stop Reform and the Conservatives and change our country after a decade of failing governments."

Brazil became the leader of Devon County Council in May of the previous year after the Lib Dems overtook the Conservatives to become the largest party without an overall majority. While local election gains continue to offer a strong base, national electoral risks persist. Luke Tryl warned that the Conservative counter-narrative of claiming a vote for the Lib Dems equates to a vote for Labour remains a significant hurdle for the party moving forward.
