Missing Link Railway Project to Boost Thailand's Logistics Hub Status

On July 29, Ms. Rachada Dhnadirek, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, addressed opposition inquiries regarding the shift from the landbridge project toward filling infrastructural gaps known as the Missing Link, assuring that southern economic opportunities will remain robust and pointing out the project's role in positioning Thailand as an ASEAN logistics hub.
The development of these missing transport links will encompass rail, road, and maritime systems, focusing on optimizing current infrastructure. Key initiatives include upgrading Ranong Port, dredging waterways, developing back-port areas, connecting road networks, and constructing the Chumphon-Ranong railway to integrate Ranong Gateway with the country's main rail grid as well as the Thailand-Laos-China and Malaysia-Singapore corridors.
Connecting rail lines directly to an Andaman Sea port serves as a strategic move to bypass congested maritime routes like the Strait of Malacca, accelerating freight movement toward South Asia and the Middle East. Utilizing pre-existing assets rather than initiating greenfield megaprojects also helps mitigate fiscal strains and environmental hurdles.
Ms. Rachada outlined the direct benefits resulting from the completed upgrades to Ranong Port and its surrounding networks, which include:
- Opening Andaman trade gateways toward BIMSTEC member nations, namely Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, while extending reach to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
- Substantially reducing transportation time and shipping costs for exporters, providing alternative trade routes, and elevating national competitiveness.

Regarding project progress, studies and designs for the Chumphon-Ranong rail line are already completed. The next step involves conducting a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before submitting the proposal to the Cabinet for approval, with an estimated construction timeline of approximately three years upon clearance. Furthermore, the government continues to advance regional development in tourism, agricultural processing, and border trade, aligning with requests from the Joint Public and Private Sector Consultative Committee to eliminate transport bottlenecks.
