The Federal Aviation Administration halted flights across key airports in New York and Philadelphia on Monday following an unexpected equipment outage tied to the Philadelphia TRACON facility.
By Monday afternoon, flights departing from New York’s JFK, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport faced severe ground stops, while LaGuardia Airport dealt with a ground delay lasting roughly 44 minutes. The disruption triggered hundreds of cancellations and delays throughout the region.

Newark and Philadelphia bore the brunt of the operational chaos. Because Newark serves as a major hub carrier for United Airlines, the airline promptly responded by issuing flight waivers to assist customers whose travel plans were disrupted by the outage.
This latest incident underscores long-standing vulnerabilities within aging U.S. air traffic control infrastructure, which frequently contends with outdated hardware and facility strain. Newark, in particular, has suffered repeated operational hurdles in previous years due to a combination of equipment obsolescence and staffing constraints, making infrastructure modernization an urgent priority.
Coincidentally, on the very same day as the outage, the FAA officially unveiled a new artificial intelligence-powered air traffic control tool called SMART. The system is specifically designed to streamline air traffic management and help mitigate persistent flight delay issues across the national airspace system.
