While many consumers want to purchase electric vehicles, not everyone is prepared to cover the steep costs associated with upgrading their home’s electrical service to support a new EV charger. Research indicates that upgrading electrical panels located in garages or basements can more than double the total installation expenses.
Pittsfield, Massachusetts-based startup Noble Carbon has developed a specialized circuit breaker designed to eliminate this installation headache without requiring homeowners to rip out their existing electrical panels. Beyond EV chargers, the smart breakers also simplify the integration of high-draw appliances such as heat pumps and induction stoves.
The company is among 200 startups selected for this year’s TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a pitch competition taking place at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco this October, where 20 finalists will pitch on the main stage.
Noble Carbon’s breakers dynamically adjust electricity flow to an EV charger in real-time, allowing chargers to fit safely into panels that are otherwise at maximum capacity. Spencer Fields, Noble Carbon’s head of marketing, explained that residential electrical panels are typically engineered to handle absolute peak usage that might only occur a few times a year.

"In order to avoid a main panel upgrade, you really only need control on your three to six largest loads."

Co-founder and CEO Jared Lebos was inspired to create the hardware after experiencing rolling blackouts in his home country of South Africa. He collaborated with co-founder and CTO Andrew Crane to bring the product to market. The result is a breaker that slots directly into existing home electrical panels and takes less than five minutes to install, according to the firm. The product is currently undergoing evaluation for UL safety certification after more than a year of internal employee testing.
Context and Analysis: Smart load management technology addresses a critical bottleneck in the residential green energy transition. Traditional home electrical panels were built for historical energy loads and often lack the capacity to handle simultaneous high-draw appliances like electric vehicles and heat pumps. Innovations that target individual circuit breakers offer a practical alternative to disruptive and expensive full-panel replacements.
Noble Carbon is currently partnering with utility provider Eversource to install its smart breakers in up to 200 multifamily residential units across Massachusetts. This article was reported by Tim De Chant, a senior climate reporter at TechCrunch.
