Microsoft has given its smaller portable computing lineup a refresh, updating both the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 Plus processors. While maintaining the familiar design and hardware features of their predecessors, these refreshed devices focus heavily on internal performance enhancements, speed improvements, and extended battery runtime.
Regarding pricing and release details, the Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition debuts on October 13 with a starting price of $1,149.99, compared to last year's $799.99 starting price. Similarly, the 13-inch Surface Laptop moves from an original starting price of $899.99 up to $1,199.99. This price adjustment is partly driven by the removal of the base 8GB RAM tier, as both devices now start with a minimum of 16GB of RAM and can be configured up to 24GB.
In terms of performance gains, Microsoft highlights that the six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chips deliver up to 18 percent more efficient battery performance, over 60 percent faster graphics capabilities, and up to 95 percent faster local AI processing via the built-in NPU. On the Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition, this translates to an extra hour of web browsing for up to 13 hours total, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch Second Edition gains two extra hours, reaching up to 18 hours of usage.

Display panels have also seen a brightness boost from 400 nits to 500 nits. The Surface Pro 12-inch retains its 2196 x 1464 (220 PPI) LCD screen running at up to 90Hz, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch features a 1920 x 1280 (178 PPI) display locked at 60Hz. Port selection remains consistent with dual USB-C 3.2 ports on both devices, alongside a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the laptop model, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support included.
Microsoft's decision to eliminate the 8GB RAM base tier reflects broader industry shifts toward higher baseline memory for modern AI PCs. As local NPU workloads and multitasking demands increase, 16GB has become the functional baseline for smooth day-to-day operations, directly impacting introductory price points across the Windows hardware ecosystem.
Additionally, Microsoft is bringing back the classic black color option alongside platinum silver and violet. Both updated devices will be sold to commercial customers, and the Surface Pro 12-inch will also be offered in an optional 5G configuration.
