Meta is renewing its quest to make virtual reality a mainstream reality. At its annual Connect event, the company unveiled its newest entry into the VR market, scheduled to hit the shelves next spring with a starting price of $1,299.99. The device aims to overcome the bulkiness that has historically hindered adoption.
Moments before the reveal, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reminded the audience that the company had shifted its focus away from the metaverse for a period, pausing heavy hardware development until true technological breakthroughs were achieved. These new glasses appear to be the fruits of that strategy with a far more approachable form factor.
Meta states that the glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, sporting a profile much closer to normal eyewear than previous heavy headsets. The frames are constructed from magnesium alloy and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, connected to a pocket-sized computing puck that doubles as the battery pack for on-the-go use.

Engineered primarily for entertainment, the glasses feature built-in Micro-OLED panels delivering a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, alongside Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio support. Users can download and watch movies, with Meta highlighting the glasses as a prime medium for enjoying IMAX-captured films.
Meta's hardware pivot reflects a broader industry recognition that comfort and wearability are make-or-break factors for consumer VR adoption. By shifting the computational load and battery into a pocket puck, the company successfully addresses facial fatigue, marking a pragmatic design evolution for extended media consumption.
The device also supports 3D content that blends into a user's physical space. Meta announced a partnership with Disney, allowing Disney+ users to stream specific titles, including select Marvel movies, in 3D starting in November. Surroundings will transform with immersive environments, dynamic effects, and spatial audio to create a gaming-like cinematic experience.
Furthermore, the glasses come with Meta AI built directly into the system. Users can interact via voice commands to launch movies and automate tasks, or navigate using intuitive hand gestures.
