Google DeepMind Says Gemini 4 Is Almost Ready

Google is reportedly nearing the rollout of its highly anticipated Gemini 4 model, following a period where the tech giant lagged behind rival developers in launching flagship artificial intelligence releases.
Speaking with The Information during his first media appearance as the leader of Google’s DeepMind division, Koray Kavukcuoglu stated that Gemini 4 is currently in its refinement stage, with the company aiming to launch the model much earlier than the end of the year.

Kavukcuoglu elaborated on the team's upcoming release strategy and ongoing momentum:
"Our intention is to, like — as soon as possible — to release an early post-training output because we see the results and we are excited."

This development hopefully marks Google's return to a more consistent AI release schedule following leadership changes at DeepMind, including former AI head Demis Hassabis stepping down back in August amidst ongoing technological progress.
Google DeepMind's pivot toward focusing on major model development like Gemini 4 rather than rolling out intermediate releases highlights the intense pressure from competitors such as OpenAI's GPT-6 and Anthropic's Mythos series. Under new leadership, accelerating product timelines is critical for Google to regain its competitive standing in the frontier AI race.
Google has not released a brand-new flagship AI model since the Gemini 3 lineup debuted in November 2025, while rivals have introduced systems that outperform it. Although CEO Sundar Pichai promised a major Gemini 3.5 Pro update during the May I/O event to bridge the gap, that particular model was never officially rolled out to the public.
