At the recent Meta Connect event, Mark Zuckerberg and the Meta executive team turned heads in the tech industry by introducing Meta VR Glasses, a next-generation VR headset tailored for productivity and entertainment. The new device aims to challenge major market rivals directly by emphasizing comfort, lightweight design, and a more accessible price point.
Weight and bulk have long been the primary hurdles for VR headsets, but Meta tackles this issue using a split architecture. By moving the processor, cooling fan, and battery out of the headset and into a compact 300g device called the Compute Puck, users can easily slip it into their pocket or place it on a desk.

As a result of this hardware separation, the Meta VR Glasses headset weighs a mere 100 grams, making it six times lighter than the Apple Vision Pro, which ranges between 600 and 700 grams, and five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3S. It is styled like oversized sunglasses, ensuring comfortable wear without facial pressure or messing up hairstyles.
Beyond multi-screen layouts and virtual movie viewing, the device introduces new productivity capabilities. Touch Typing projects a virtual keyboard and trackpad onto a real desk surface, allowing users to type with a feel similar to using an iPad. Additionally, Photorealistic Holograms utilize AI to generate true-to-scale digital avatars of users for remarkably realistic video conferencing.
"We all know Apple missed the mark on weight because nobody can wear that thing on their face for long. It's not glasses, and it looks ridiculous wearing it."
Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta
For entertainment, the headset includes six cameras providing a full-color real-time passthrough of the physical world, launching alongside more than 75 hand-tracked games. Meta has also partnered with Disney+ and Peacock to bring blockbuster films like Avatar, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars, enhanced by a VR Enhanced Cinema feature that bleeds lighting and visual effects around the room.
The introduction of Meta VR Glasses marks a strategic shift for Meta. Moving away from selling hardware at a loss solely to capture App Store revenue, the $1,299 price tag allows the Reality Labs division to turn a profit directly from hardware sales. Decoupling the compute power into the Compute Puck solves the critical weight problem, bringing everyday VR usage closer to reality.
Although the official release is set for the spring of 2027 and the price remains high compared to standard tech gadgets, this device serves as a major wake-up call, pressuring competitors like Apple to rethink their hardware and pricing strategies.
