Full school day cellphone bans are more popular than ever

As schools across the country continue to implement cellphone restrictions, a new survey from the Pew Research Center demonstrates that public backing for these policies is steadily climbing among communities and households nationwide.
Seventy-seven percent of US adults express support for banning cellphones during middle and high school classes, while 48 percent back prohibitions covering the entire school day. This marks the first time that more Americans favor bell-to-bell bans than oppose them. Just two years prior, only 36 percent of American adults supported an all-day ban.

Broken down by demographics, a majority of respondents across all surveyed age groups over 18 favor in-class restrictions. Support for all-day bans remains at least half across most age brackets, with the notable exception of adults aged 18 to 29, where approval for a bell-to-bell ban drops sharply to 28 percent. Politically, Republicans show slightly higher favorability for both in-class and all-day bans at 81 percent and 55 percent, respectively, though Democrats also demonstrate broad backing with 74 percent supporting in-class limits and 44 percent supporting all-day prohibitions.
The shift toward majority support for full-day cellphone bans highlights a growing consensus among parents and educators regarding digital distractions in academic environments. As smartphones increasingly tether youth to social media feeds during educational hours, communities are looking beyond mere classroom management toward comprehensive wellness interventions, prompting widespread legislative action across numerous states.
More than 20 states have already adopted bell-to-bell cellphone prohibitions, with early research pointing to mixed outcomes. One study highlighted positive long-term effects on student well-being without clear evidence of impact on test scores, while another noted an initial spike in suspension rates during the first year that eventually normalized alongside a drop in unexcused absences.
