Microsoft and Qualcomm appear to be dropping the Copilot Plus PC brand name just two and a half years after launching the initiative to highlight computers built with dedicated AI processing muscle. According to a report by Zac Bowden at Windows Central, upcoming devices such as the new 12-inch Microsoft Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop technically meet all system requirements but will no longer carry the branding.
Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrom explicitly confirmed to the publication that these new devices are not being called Copilot Plus PCs. Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of compute and gaming, also indicated that future computers offering equivalent AI experiences will likely move away from using that specific branding moving forward.
Industry observers anticipated this retreat as early as 2024, noting that standard computers would naturally incorporate baseline AI hardware capabilities over time. Furthermore, the flagship Recall feature faced heavy skepticism, and Microsoft received criticism for persistent AI upsells in Windows, alongside user complaints about the dedicated Copilot keyboard key which users can now finally remap.
