- YouTube revealed 6 new features at Made On YouTube to build communities
- New additions include GIF comments and voice typing on TV screens
- Updates feature channel memberships, Hype with Jewels, and group DMs
YouTube is rolling out new updates to transform the platform into a more community-driven space, focusing heavily on comments and membership systems. This shift ensures YouTube is no longer just a place to watch and leave videos, but a central hub where creators can build fan groups and open exclusive spaces for like-minded audiences to interact more enjoyably.
At the same time, viewers will gain more ways to participate, exchange opinions, and support their favorite creators, bridging the gap between audiences and content creators. These features were announced during the Made On YouTube event, with some currently in testing and others rolling out over the coming months without a fixed launch date.
A prominent new feature is replying to comments using GIFs instead of just text, adding color and lively expression to the comment section. Additionally, commenting while watching YouTube on a TV will no longer require tedious remote-typing, as voice input will be enabled for typing comments directly.

Furthermore, YouTube is testing a new comment management system allowing creators to filter comments with greater detail, which is particularly useful during fast-flowing live streams. Another exciting update is the channel membership system, where paying subscribers get a dedicated Community space for members to post and chat with fellow super fans inside a revamped Channel Memberships hub.
YouTube is also updating its Hype feature, which allows fans to help push small creators' videos to a wider audience. Moving beyond the free weekly limit of 3 times, the new Hype with Jewels system lets fans purchase Jewels to continually boost their favorite channels, with their account names permanently displayed in the video's description.
YouTube's aggressive push into community features highlights how video streaming platforms are evolving from one-way content consumption into deep engagement ecosystems designed to retain user attention amid fierce competition.
The Direct Messaging system for sharing clips with friends is also getting an overhaul. In the coming months, users will be able to set up group chats on YouTube to share videos and chat with multiple people, alongside recording and sending short live video clips directly into the chat.
