Bangkok Gov Chadchart: Full Canals, Not Clogged Pipes

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited eastern Bangkok to monitor severe flooding caused by torrential rainfall, inspecting drainage operations along the Prawet Burirom Canal in Suan Luang district and the Nong Bon Swamp. He urged the drainage department and relevant agencies to mobilize all available resources to manage and expedite water drainage across the affected areas.

According to the local situation report, rainfall over a 24-hour period exceeded 150 millimeters in certain areas and continued persistently, causing multiple canals to reach their maximum capacity and leading to overflow in riverside communities. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials have been operating drainage pumps at full capacity, but due to the overwhelming volume of rainwater surpassing the canals' drainage limits, a gradual clearance process is required.

During his inspection at Nong Bon Swamp, Governor Chadchart instructed officers to step up efforts in collecting garbage and obstacles blocking water flow, while rapidly opening water intake channels to draw more water from canals into the swamp. Furthermore, additional mobile drainage pumps have been prepared to reinforce critical flooding points.

"The main issue right now is not clogged pipes. Water flows from pipes into the canals, but when the canals are full, the water has nowhere to go. We must accelerate drainage from the canals. Tonight, we will keep working through the night as rain is expected to continue."
