One of the notable restrictions of the new variable aperture main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro is that users are restricted to just four manual settings within the native iOS camera app: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. These identical constraints also apply when the system adjusts the iris automatically in Auto aperture mode.
However, this is not a strict limitation imposed by the iPhone camera hardware itself. Apple's software development kit permits third-party camera applications to implement much more granular control over the aperture mechanism.
BlackMagic Design's well-equipped and completely free Blackmagic Camera app for iOS emerged as one of the earliest third-party solutions to incorporate support for the iPhone 18 Pro's adjustable aperture. Instead of maintaining just four stop settings, the application provides 10 presets alongside intermediate choices between the options available in iOS.
The iPhoneographers YouTube channel evaluated this new functionality in version 3.5 of the application last week, describing it as quite buggy before the software was updated to version 3.5.1 to deliver general performance and stability enhancements.
Apple's decision to expose such deep hardware controls through its SDK highlights a strategy of empowering third-party developers to push smartphone hardware to its absolute limits. Pro-grade tools like granular aperture adjustments bridge the gap between stock convenience and creative professional demands.
Moment subsequently followed this trajectory by publishing an announcement on X stating that its $12.99 Moment Pro Camera II application has received an update to support the iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture.
Users can modify the aperture ranging from f/1.48 up to f/4.0 in increments of 1/3 stop, yielding a total of 10 presets identical to Blackmagic's implementation and matching the standard approach utilized by most standalone digital cameras.
Considering the compact sensor size featured in the iPhone 18 Pro, photographers might find it challenging to notice visual differences in background blur and depth of field when comparing f-stops separated by merely a 1/3 stop, though having expanded creative control remains a welcomed advantage.
