Murcia-based architectural practice MEII Estudio has completed a striking renovation of the municipal sports complex in La Unión, Spain. The intervention successfully combines renewable energy infrastructure with bold architectural elements, locally referred to as EL POLI Y LA PERGOLA.
The renovated entrance building serves as a welcoming gateway uniting essential facilities such as changing rooms, offices, and a cafeteria under a strong horizontal identity. Clad in ventilated ceramic facade panels featuring vivid lime-green ribbed tiles, the structure deliberately contrasts with La Unión's distinct mining landscape. A fully foldable metal entrance further blurs the boundary between the town and the public facilities.

Serving as the project's centerpiece, LA PÉRGOLA transforms pure energy infrastructure into an architectural landmark. Designed by MEII Estudio to maximize solar production, its geometry is driven by the optimal south-facing orientation and inclination of photovoltaic panels, calculated precisely to the latitude of La Unión to create a distinctive sawtooth profile.
Integrating solar infrastructure into public architecture, often referred to as BIPV, reflects a growing global shift toward functional sustainability where municipal amenities actively contribute to local clean energy grids while revitalizing urban aesthetics.
Constructed with a robust three-dimensional steel structure and clad in blue metal sheeting, the canopy dynamically shifts in appearance with changing natural light while offering much-needed shade for the existing football stands.
Together, the lime-green entrance and the blue solar canopy deliver clean renewable energy, improve user comfort, and forge a bold new architectural identity for the sports complex in Spain.
