A severe Nor'easter storm has slammed the northeastern United States, prompting official states of emergency in New York and New Jersey as coastal areas battle severe flooding, heavy rainfall, and powerful winds stretching from Virginia to Maine.
The extreme weather has forced the cancellation of several high-profile entertainment and sporting events. Ed Sheeran's highly anticipated concert at Gillette Stadium near Boston was called off for safety reasons, alongside the Global Citizen Festival in New York City's Central Park, which was scheduled to feature Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and John Legend. Sports fixtures, including the Boston Red Sox weekend series and a professional soccer match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC, were also postponed.

Critical infrastructure has sustained significant damage, with poweroutage.us reporting that nearly 150,000 households have lost electricity. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration advised travelers to check flight statuses as FlightAware data showed more than 1,100 flights delayed and an additional 400 grounded.

A Nor'easter is a classic intense storm system occurring along the East Coast of North America, named for the strong winds blowing from the northeast off the Atlantic Ocean. When combined with astronomical high tides from a full moon, these storms frequently produce severe coastal erosion, storm surges, and extensive property damage in low-lying metropolitan and suburban areas.
