Suriya Orders Proactive Water Management Plan

Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed the update following a meeting to monitor water situations and management guidelines for the Chao Phraya River basin at the Rama IX Kanchanaphisek Gate and Khlong Lat Phos Royal Project in Samut Prakan Province on September 27, 2026. He noted that throughout September, Thailand was affected by multiple monsoon troughs and southwest monsoons, causing heavy continuous rain, runoff, and flooding in several low-lying regions. Although conditions have begun to ease in many areas, close observation remains necessary for vulnerable zones and major riverbanks.

In response to the situation and following the Prime Minister's directives, Mr. Suriya instructed the Royal Irrigation Department to continuously monitor weather conditions and water levels nationwide, particularly in high-risk zones. The department has been told to maintain round-the-clock readiness involving personnel, machinery, equipment, and irrigation systems to ensure rapid responses.

For upcoming operations, the Minister emphasized integrating data from all sectors to analyze and continuously assess trends, allowing water management plans to be adjusted precisely to suit regional conditions. He also urged swift deployment of machinery to drain water from flooded localities back to normal conditions as quickly as possible.

Furthermore, regarding the Chao Phraya River basin, strategies include managing upper basin areas to accommodate incoming water and utilizing both eastern and western irrigation systems to distribute and discharge water across regions at maximum capacity, while balancing protection for agricultural zones and economic districts.
