England win ODI series against Sri Lanka as Banton shines

Tom Banton delivered a stellar performance by crashing his brilliant first international century to wrap up the summer with an ODI series victory for England against Sri Lanka. The 27-year-old right-hander, once regarded as the rising star of English cricket when he made his debut in 2019, overcame years of difficulties and inconsistent appearances to reach this career milestone at the Kia Oval.

Reaching his hundred in 95 deliveries during the third one-day international, Banton celebrated by standing with his arms wide and looking toward the sky, leaving past disappointments behind. Afterward, he mentioned that his fiancee Lilly and her family were present to witness his long-awaited achievement following years of pressure and comparisons to cricket legends.

The opening batsman ultimately amassed 126 runs from 105 balls, successfully navigating tricky early conditions and sharing a powerful 150-run stand with captain Harry Brook. Brook contributed 77 runs, while Jordan Cox, selected in place of the injured Jos Buttler, added 76 runs from 52 deliveries to lift England to a commanding total of 355-7 from their 50 overs, a score that proved insurmountable on a pitch offering bounce and turn.

In response, Sri Lanka collapsed under pressure and were bowled out for just 132 runs in 29.1 overs, giving England a 223-run win and their largest-ever ODI victory against the touring side. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson rewarded the selectors' faith with bowling figures of 3-26, while Sonny Baker struck early in the second over to dismantle the opposition's batting lineup from the outset.
