The global sheepdog trials community witnessed a historic milestone last weekend as a Welsh father and son duo clinched top honors at the Sheep Dog World Trial held in Scotland, marking the first time in history that a parent and child have secured both major titles at the same global event.
David Howells, a farmer hailing from Cymmer in Neath Port Talbot, triumphed in the main world championship category with his Border Collie, Wyverne Pip. He emerged victorious amidst a fiercely contested field of approximately 300 competitors representing 34 different countries from around the globe.

Meanwhile, his 19-year-old son, Jack, claimed the Young Handler world title operating his dog, Cydros Boss, successfully navigating through demanding qualifying stages and a final round that featured competitors from nations such as Belgium and Uruguay.
Sheepdog trials are highly technical rural sporting events where handlers use whistles and verbal commands to direct dogs through complex obstacle courses and penning tasks. Achieving mastery requires years of dedicated practice, making a simultaneous family victory across different age divisions an exceptionally rare and remarkable feat in the sport's history.
Speaking to BBC Radio Wales on Wednesday, David described the shared triumph and collecting their trophies alongside his son as a surreal experience that he never envisioned happening in a million years, expressing immense pride in watching his son follow in his footsteps since starting with sheepdogs around age 10.
"So, for the two of us to achieve it, it was just extra special."

Family members including David's mother, sister, and girlfriend traveled to Edinburgh to watch the event live, while relatives tuned in from home. Looking ahead, Jack confirmed his commitment to sticking with the sport and expressed excitement for the upcoming International Championship next year.
