Thai Army Reports Soldier Loses Foot in Landmine Blast Along Sa Kaeo Border

On July 29, 2026, Major General Winthai Suvaree, a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, reported that a military personnel sustained severe injuries from a landmine detonation while carrying out clearance duties. The operation was managed by the Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 1 (HMAU 1) in a historically hazardous zone that formerly served as a battlefield near Ban Nong Chan village in Non Mak Mun sub-district, Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province.
Over the years, HMAU 1 has successfully cleared and secured approximately 76.73 percent of the designated dangerous zone. Throughout these ongoing operations, the teams have uncovered and recovered a total of 489 items of unexploded ordnance and remaining landmines, demonstrating their continued commitment to achieving complete safety in the region.
As a result of the unexpected blast, the soldier suffered the traumatic amputation of his left foot along with multiple shrapnel wounds across his body. On-site rescue teams provided immediate assistance and evacuated him to Aranyaprathet Hospital for urgent medical attention, where he is currently under close observation by professional medical personnel.

Humanitarian landmine clearance operations remain among the most perilous military engineering duties, as legacy minefields along international borders often lack precise mapping records. Demining personnel must meticulously neutralize hidden threats using advanced detection technology, balancing the urgent need to return safe agricultural land to local communities with extreme personal risk.
Major General Winthai added that the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army has closely monitored the situation and strictly instructed relevant units to provide absolute support for the injured soldier. This includes comprehensive medical treatment, physical rehabilitation programs, and all due entitlements and welfare provisions.
Furthermore, the army leadership reiterated a strong warning to all personnel deployed in hazard-prone sectors to exercise utmost caution, eliminate complacency, and prioritize personal safety above all to ensure operational efficiency in securing border areas.
