AMD has announced a major agreement to acquire World Labs, a leading developer of deep learning models designed to understand physical reality, for $8.2 billion, according to an announcement by both companies on September 28, 2026.
World Labs justified the transaction by stating that artificial intelligence development requires close collaboration across model research, systems, and compute. In response, AMD noted that understanding frontier workloads, such as those developed at World Labs, will directly shape its future chip-making roadmap.
Under the terms of the acquisition, World Labs founder and Stanford computer science professor Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The two companies previously established an inference optimization-and-training partnership last year, and Li was notably a guest at AMD's CES presentation earlier in 2026.

World Labs
Li is widely recognized as a pioneer in AI, particularly in computer vision, through her work building the ImageNet database and its inspired competitions. In 2024, she founded World Labs to build deep learning models with a robust understanding of the physical world, arguing that true general intelligence requires grounding in physics and reasoning capabilities beyond text.
This acquisition highlights AMD's strategic push to bridge the software and ecosystem gap with long-standing rival Nvidia, which already offers open-weight world models like Cosmos. Integrating World Labs' technology and securing Li's leadership will equip AMD with crucial capabilities for deploying AI chips into physical systems and robotics.
World models are viewed as essential for deploying generative AI on robotic platforms, ranging from autonomous vehicles and industrial robots to general-purpose humanoids. Because useful real-world training data for general-purpose robots remains scarce, synthetic data generated by world models will be pivotal in fulfilling the visions outlined by companies like Tesla and Figure.
The acquisition is expected to conclude before the end of the year, pending standard regulatory approval.
