For Dior's Summer 2027 women's show, Bureau Betak transformed Le Bassin Octogonal inside the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris into a temporary landscape of water, mist, and living trees, featuring creative direction by Jonathan Anderson.
A solid white runway cuts straight across the octagonal basin, flanked by water and enveloped in shifting clouds of mist. Camphor trees emerge directly from the water around the catwalk, introducing an irregular, organic presence into an otherwise strictly controlled architectural composition.
The central tension of the installation lies in the stark contrast between the precise lines of the runway and the organic irregularity of the trees. The crisp white paths establish an exact geometric layout, while the uneven trunks and canopies of the camphor trees interrupt that geometry as mist softens the overall edges.
Integrating live elements directly into high-fashion scenography highlights a growing industry shift toward sustainability and environmental consciousness. By ensuring that temporary set materials like trees are replanted rather than discarded, designers bridge the gap between ephemeral event architecture and long-term ecological responsibility.
Guests are seated along the perimeter of the basin, viewing the models across the water. The movement of the models activates the entire spatial composition, bringing life to the surrounding water, mist, and trees. Dior confirmed that the camphor trees brought in for the presentation will later be permanently replanted in the Tuileries grounds.
This relationship between controlled structures and natural variation also extends to the collection's invitation. A pair of wénwán walnuts sits inside a custom-fitted box, referencing a Chinese tradition where handling the nuts over time develops a smooth patina. Finding two closely matched walnuts remains a rare challenge.
