When Amazon raised the prices of most of its Kindle devices last month by more than 30%, it looked like a reaction to the ongoing RAM crisis, but it may also have been a clever timing strategy. Today, the company has announced a near-total overhaul of its line of e-readers, which are now thinner, lighter, faster, and more thoughtfully designed than ever, ensuring users swallow the recent price hike with much less bitterness.
The entire lineup, ranging from the 150-dollar entry-level Kindle to the 319-dollar Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, now features a new flush-front design. Upgraded standard Kindles and the pricier Signature Editions also incorporate an aluminum back, providing a premium feel while enabling a brand-new line of magnetic accessories. Furthermore, Amazon promises that all devices are the fastest ever, featuring 30 percent quicker page turns.

The standard 16GB Kindle is priced at 149.99 dollars with lock screen ads and 169.99 dollars without ads, retaining basic features like a six-inch, 300ppi touchscreen and adjustable front light while introducing eye-catching colors like Alpine Sky and Ube. Kevin Keith, vice president in charge of Kindle, noted the company was shocked when the matcha-colored Kindle released a few years ago accounted for over 50 percent of device sales, prompting Amazon to double down on vibrant color options.
Amazon's transition to aluminum builds and magnetic connectors signals a mature hardware strategy aimed at capturing the premium e-reader market. By creating dedicated accessory ecosystems similar to modern tablets, the company increases peripheral sales while offering functional customization that hardcore reading enthusiasts have demanded for years.

Despite boasting a lighter build of around 140 grams, a thickness of 6.8 millimeters, and 30 percent faster page turns, the new Kindles do not fundamentally reinvent the reading experience. Nearly 20 years after its debut, the Kindle remains the undisputed gold standard of e-readers. The redesigned devices, alongside Kindle Kids options priced at 179.99 dollars, are available now, while the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft models are open for pre-order and will ship on October 28.
Nevertheless, the true standout of the announcement is the accompanying hardware accessories. Amazon is introducing the Page-Turn Cover, a magnetic case for the Signature Editions of the Paperwhite and Colorsoft that connects via pogo pins to add physical page-turn buttons. Additionally, for the very first time across the entire Kindle lineup, Amazon now officially supports a Bluetooth remote for turning pages without touching the screen.
