- First shipments are officially scheduled to begin on October 21st
Popular beverage appliance maker Keurig is taking a major step toward sustainability with the introduction of its newest coffee machine, the Keurig Alta. The system is engineered to eliminate the environmental footprint of traditional plastic and aluminum pods by swapping them out for compressed coffee portions known as AltaRounds. These pucks are encased in a plant-based coating derived from seaweed, making the entire pod 100 percent compostable. While the items currently arrive in protective plastic wrappers to maintain freshness, the corporation is actively transitioning toward paper packaging alternatives according to CNET.
The Keurig Alta is currently accepting customer preorders at a retail price of $499.99, with initial deliveries slated to roll out on October 21st. Color configurations offered include graphite, sandstone, and a mixed sandstone variant featuring a satin stainless gray finish. At launch, the appliance is bundled with a selection of glassware alongside six boxes of AltaRounds, featuring six caffeinated variations spanning light roasts, medium roasts, and flavored choices.
Positioned as one of the brand's most premium consumer-facing machines, the Alta delivers dual functionality by operating as an espresso maker in addition to standard brewing modes. High-pressure hot water is forced through the puck after an array of internal spikes punctures the casing, followed by automated milk texturing provided by an integrated built-in frother.

Despite these advanced capabilities, the Alta maintains the trademark simplicity associated with older Keurig appliances. End users are not required to operate an external grinder or understand manual tamping techniques. Each individual AltaRounds puck features a printed QR code that the machine's internal scanner reads to automatically configure precise brewing parameters including pressure and temperature settings.
This hardware release highlights how major appliance manufacturers are addressing persistent environmental criticisms regarding single-serve pod waste. By utilizing seaweed-based coatings for compressed coffee grounds, Keurig attempts to reconcile ecological responsibility with the effortless user experience that originally drove the brand's mainstream success.
Users can navigate various beverage recipes through a spacious touchscreen display integrated directly into the body of the machine. Furthermore, the Alta features native Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling the appliance to download software updates and incorporate newly released drink recipes as additional varieties of AltaRounds become available on the market.
