A while ago, an independent developer introduced base31.org as a small home for interesting internet finds. Since then, the concept has grown beyond a standard directory into a platform where users can discover quirky websites, use lightweight browser tools, explore public APIs and AI projects, and even upload static sites for others to explore.
The independent, hand-built project focuses on making web exploration fun again. The creator designed the platform to feel less like an app store or a generic listicle, aiming instead to serve as a starting point for curiosity since many great small web projects are often difficult to find.

One of the major shifts involved moving past simple link-sharing by building standalone mini-tools that reside on their own subdomains. This architecture allows base31 to function simultaneously as a discovery engine and a collection of lightweight web experiments.
Transforming a static directory into a modular ecosystem of subdomain-hosted tools via Next.js highlights a modern trend in indie web development. This approach enables solo creators to scale a simple link repository into a rich collection of interactive micro-utilities without inheriting the complexity of traditional monolithic web apps.
Technically, the main application relies on Next.js and TypeScript, while backend operations run on Cloudflare Workers. Key architectural components include:
- Next.js App: Handles curated directory pages, search and category filtering, tool guides, changelogs, and static-tool routing for subdomains.
- Cloudflare Worker: Manages basic stats, voting, community site publishing, discussion boards, notification subscriptions, and shared API endpoints.
The codebase is publicly available on GitHub. Curated entries are maintained in editable JSON files rather than hardcoded UI components, making it simple to add new tools or websites without rewriting frontend logic.
Another expanding focus is community publishing, allowing visitors to upload simple HTML, CSS, and JavaScript static sites directly. The platform hosts, lists, and facilitates user voting for these community-submitted web experiments.
