Microsoft has made a major splash in the gaming industry as internal sources reveal that the Xbox division has successfully secured a deal for the exclusive streaming rights to Grand Theft Auto VI. The news was shared by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma during an employee all-hands meeting this morning, where she told staff that Microsoft is preparing to execute a strategy around the highly anticipated title that no other platform holder is attempting.
The agreement ensures that only Xbox Cloud Gaming will be capable of streaming Grand Theft Auto VI to players at launch. While the exact duration of the exclusivity window remains undisclosed, the deal provides Xbox with a powerful marketing tool to target PC players—since Rockstar Games has yet to announce a native PC port—who would otherwise need to purchase an Xbox Series X/S or PS5 console to experience the game.

The timing of these streaming rights aligns closely with a series of significant updates to Xbox Cloud Gaming announced by Microsoft last month. Beginning in November, coinciding with the launch month of Grand Theft Auto VI, the tech giant is implementing streaming hour caps across its subscription tiers:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers: Limited to 15 streaming hours
- Premium subscribers: Limited to 10 streaming hours
- Game Pass Essential subscribers: Limited to 5 streaming hours
Alongside these tier limits, Microsoft is rolling out a pay-as-you-go option next month, breaking away from the strict requirement of maintaining an active Game Pass subscription to access cloud gaming. This pay-as-you-go model arrives at an ideal moment for Grand Theft Auto VI, enabling individuals who do not own a console or who primarily game on mobile phones to purchase specific hour bundles to stream the title.
"no other platform holder is doing"
Asha Sharma, Xbox CEO
Securing exclusive streaming rights for a title as massive as GTA 6 marks a pivotal pivot for Microsoft's cloud strategy. By tapping into PC and mobile audiences who wish to bypass expensive hardware investments, Xbox is effectively positioning cloud streaming as a viable alternative for AAA gaming, supported flexibly by tiered caps and pay-as-you-go hourly purchases.
During the same all-hands meeting, Sharma also touched upon Project Helix, confirming that the next generation of Xbox hardware will span a family of devices. She noted that Microsoft intends to collaborate with external partners on several of these units, building upon the strategic multi-year partnership established with AMD last year to develop a portfolio of next-generation console hardware.
