Border Arquitectos has unveiled Centro Deportivo Abejas, a 60,000-square-meter public sports complex located in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. The project was created to address the recreational needs of a rapidly expanding neighborhood that previously lacked adequate public facilities, utilizing a continuous landscape approach to connect sports and community life.
Instead of scattering isolated buildings and fields across the site, the architectural layout treats open space as the primary organizing framework. Soccer pitches, basketball courts, running tracks, and training grounds are seamlessly connected through pedestrian walkways and shared gathering plazas.
Transforming overlooked urban voids into active civic infrastructure represents a vital urban planning strategy, enhancing community engagement and improving overall quality of life in densely populated regions.
The spaces between athletic facilities are actively programmed for movement, informal gathering, and observation. A restrained material palette consisting of durable concrete defines the circulation paths, while distinct sports surfaces visually separate different functional zones across the site.
