OpenAI is overhauling the artificial intelligence experience by rolling out a new Intelligent UI feature in ChatGPT, enabling the chatbot to answer user inquiries with interactive visuals. Launched alongside the new GPT-6 model, this update gives ChatGPT the capability to combine text responses with diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons, and various other interactive elements.

In a blog post detailing the updates, OpenAI explained that it trained GPT-6 to determine when to generate interactive visuals instead of plain text, as well as how to properly format them within its responses. An example provided by the company demonstrates how ChatGPT can display a diagram of a seven-speed bicycle when asked about its design, complete with interactive buttons that highlight different sections of the bike.

Another demonstration shows how ChatGPT can teach users how to play Mahjong by generating visuals for each tile and organizing them into scrollable categories. Users are also able to prompt ChatGPT to build custom tools for specific tasks, such as a retirement savings calculator, a retro game, or a bill-splitting utility, which the system will then generate inline directly within the conversation.

OpenAI originally announced its first GPT-6 models last month and is now introducing the Sol and Luna versions to ChatGPT. Alongside powering the Intelligent UI, the company states that GPT-6 enables better web searches and provides quicker, partial answers while gathering information. OpenAI also noted that GPT-6 demonstrates stronger resistance against attempts to bypass its safety training protocols.

This update highlights the broader industry shift of AI chatbots moving beyond text-only interactions toward rich, multi-modal interfaces. By allowing the model to dynamically generate functional micro-tools like calculators or games right inside the chat interface, GPT-6 blurs the line between a conversational assistant and a modular application platform.

GPT-6 equipped with the Intelligent UI is rolling out globally starting today for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, with expansion to Go and free tier users scheduled for Thursday. Higher-tier subscribers will gain access to the mid-range GPT-6 Sol model, while Go and free users will utilize the more efficient GPT-6 Luna variant.
