The new Netflix thriller Animals is tautly directed by Ben Affleck, who keeps the central focus firmly on the flawed humanity of the characters. This character-driven approach ensures that the story remains compelling from start to finish.
Even though the kidnapping plot itself ventures into familiar, formulaic territory, the movie successfully maintains tension because none of the choices available to the protagonists are good ones.

A major strength of the film is the series of "what would you do in this scenario?" questions it poses to the audience. These moral dilemmas keep the narrative engaging when the core plot mechanics follow familiar genre tropes.
When a director like Ben Affleck takes on a gritty psychological thriller, the emphasis naturally shifts toward atmospheric tension and character study rather than blockbuster action set pieces. This style allows familiar premises, such as kidnapping plots, to be elevated through moral ambiguity and intense character dilemmas.
