Published on October 9, 2026, designboom introduced Handle Table, a bamboo coffee table featuring concealed storage integrated seamlessly into its geometry. Crafted by designer Marek Kounovský of MK Designers based in Prague, the furniture piece was created for the Prague-based furniture company Frayer, revolving around a fundamental question regarding how to keep necessary items close at hand without keeping them constantly in plain sight.
The design explores the concept of 'just enough' by striking a precise balance between function, material, and form without introducing any unnecessary decorative details that could clutter the aesthetic.

For this project, designer Marek Kounovský drew inspiration from the Japanese principle known as Hodo-hodo, which places strong emphasis on moderation, restraint, and balance. Its pared-down form highlights proportion, material quality, and construction techniques, while the built-in compartment provides convenient storage for everyday items without disrupting the minimalist appearance of the table.
The integration of concealed storage in modern furniture reflects how designers are addressing compact urban living spaces. Utilizing bamboo, a rapidly renewable material, also highlights the contemporary design shift toward sustainability, waste reduction, and maximizing the utility of natural resources.
The bamboo surface of the table is treated with an oil-based wood stain developed through specific experimentation with application methods suited to bamboo material. This specialized finish accentuates the bamboo's natural structure and tactile qualities while ensuring its organic texture remains fully visible.
Handle Table was first presented to the public at the 14th Czech Design Week international design festival held in Prague, Czech Republic. The project was submitted to designboom by lead designer Marek Kounovský through their DIY reader submission platform.
