  • Runway launches Media Router via the Runway Dev platform to serve as infrastructure for creative media.
  • The system automatically selects the most suitable image, video, and audio models based on speed, cost, and quality.
  • It assists developers facing challenges from the overwhelming number of AI models available today.
  • Major enterprise clients such as Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora can access it via API.

AI technology developer Runway has decided to elevate its role from merely a creator of AI models to an infrastructure layer for generative media. This past Thursday, the startup launched Runway Media Router through its developer platform, Runway Dev, which originally debuted in early July 2026. The platform provides access to external image, video, and audio model APIs alongside Runway's own models.

The Media Router tool is designed to select the most appropriate model for generating images, videos, or audio based on a request, factoring in whether developers prioritize quality, speed, or cost. While model routers are widespread in the realm of Large Language Models (LLMs), Runway states this is the first system built specifically for creative media.

"This routing addresses the promise of being the easiest single-stop shop for developers to integrate with all types of creative media models."

Anthony Maggio, Chief Product Officer at Runway

This launch was first reported by TechCrunch, reflecting Runway's evolution from an AI video startup into infrastructure for companies looking to build products with generative media. Through Runway Dev, prominent clients like Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora can build media generation systems directly into their products via APIs, rather than forcing users to visit Runway's own application or website.

In an era where the generative AI model market is exceptionally crowded and competitive, platform providers introducing router systems represents a crucial solution that relieves developers from having to constantly test and select new models on their own every time a new version is released. This reflects an industry trend in software where the orchestration layer takes precedence over sticking to a single model.

Anthony Maggio revealed that most developers do not spend time understanding the deep capabilities of each individual model to see how they compare across video, images, and audio. Runway's standout value proposition is combining intelligent model selection with the customer's business constraints.

Furthermore, Maggio gave the example of Chinese models gaining popularity, which some businesses might be hesitant to use due to regulatory concerns or trade restrictions from the U.S. government. This allows developers to set preferences so the system selects exclusively U.S.-based model providers. Beyond geopolitics, key factors customers look for are token pricing and output quality.
