Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has expressed on the Test Match Special podcast that the Test captaincy could serve as exactly what 35-year-old Joe Root needs during the later stages of his career, following his previous stint leading the team from 2017 to 2022.
Vaughan mentioned that given the sheer amount of cricket Root has played, he wonders if the batter needed a small trigger or motivational tool. Root returns to the leadership role under interim head coach Marcus Trescothick after Brendon McCullum's departure, ahead of New Zealander Stephen Fleming taking charge for this winter's tour of South Africa.
However, Vaughan emphasized that Root had been dealt a very difficult hand during his prior time as Test captain, noting that when he was first appointed, the country was entirely focused on winning the 50-over World Cup with all eggs placed in the white-ball basket, compounded by the unprecedented challenges of captaining through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Managing transitions in international cricket requires a delicate balance between tactical prowess and player management, especially when shifting between Test matches and limited-overs formats. Bringing in a seasoned coach like Stephen Fleming aims to alleviate the immense logistical and tactical drain often placed on a Test captain, providing structural stability ahead of high-stakes contests like the upcoming Ashes series.

Regarding the four-year appointment of Stephen Fleming—which secures his coaching role for the next two Ashes series—Vaughan praised managing director Rob Key for selecting a highly experienced candidate. Fleming recently stepped down from the Chennai Super Kings after coaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for nine seasons, following a distinguished playing career where he made 111 Test appearances for New Zealand, scoring 7,172 runs at an average of 40.06.
Vaughan added that while McCullum popularized an aggressive style known as Bazball, Fleming will need to instill technical adjustments in England's batting approach, pointing out the necessity for players to master controlled forward defence against top-quality lengths.
