- Touch Grass Check is a web application built for the first week of Hacktoberfest.
- The AI model runs locally on the device, ensuring photos never leave the phone or computer.
- Only the identified plant name is transmitted to Wikipedia for data retrieval.
- Future updates include more plant species, a nature notes gallery, and daily challenges.
Developer Tanmay Sharma has introduced his very first Hacktoberfest project, inspired by the week-one theme of "touch grass"—a colloquialism encouraging people to step away from screens and experience the outdoors. To tackle this, he built a lightweight web application designed to verify whether a user has genuinely ventured outside by identifying local flora.
Privacy remains a core pillar of the application's architecture. The captured photo never leaves the user's device, as the machine learning model operates entirely on a local level. The system only sends the recognized plant name externally to Wikipedia in order to fetch and display relevant information about the species.

The developer crafted this project with assistance from an AI coding assistant and rigorously tested it outdoors himself. He encourages fellow developers to test out the application and share what plants the system manages to detect. Looking ahead, Sharma has outlined several upcoming features for the platform:
- Expanding the database to recognize a wider variety of plants
- Adding a gallery to store past nature notes and discoveries
- Implementing a daily outdoor challenge to encourage consistent breaks
The implementation of local on-device AI processing in lightweight web tools highlights a growing industry shift toward privacy-first design. By processing image data entirely client-side, developers can eliminate data privacy risks associated with cloud storage. This approach serves as a strong architectural reference for modern web developers building utility-focused applications.
Following this initial release, the developer plans to take a brief hiatus to focus on his academic exams. He concluded by thanking the developer community for their engagement and welcoming constructive feedback for future iterations of the project.
