  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella proposed an emergency brake system for AI models.
  • He stated that AI models must be separated from their orchestration harness.
  • Called for tamper-proof, human-readable evidence for meaningful model actions.
  • Comes as leading AI firms face incidents where they lost control of models.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has joined other tech executives in sharing extensive thoughts on how to improve artificial intelligence safety. In a Saturday morning post on X, Nadella wrote that it is time to step back and reassess the trust architecture of AI systems.

Nadella noted in his post that the industry can no longer treat Super Intelligence as a set of nested black boxes where users simply accept or reject recommendations, answers, and actions generated by the system.

"We must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start. Think of it like an emergency brake."

As outlined in his proposal, this approach requires separating the AI model from the harness that orchestrates its work, alongside externalizing controls and safeguards. He also called for every meaningful action taken by a model to be documented with tamper-proof and human-readable evidence.

Furthermore, the architecture must ensure that an authorized person always retains the ability to pause or shut down a model mid-task. Nadella compared this critical capability to having an emergency brake to prevent systems from running out of human control.

Satya Nadella's proposal highlights a growing shift among major tech leaders from purely pursuing AI capabilities toward establishing systemic risk controls. As a primary backer of OpenAI, Microsoft's push for external oversight and absolute human intervention mechanisms indicates that the industry is taking alignment problems seriously and attempting to preempt strict government regulations with internal safety standards.

Nadella's remarks arrive as leading AI companies increasingly acknowledge incidents where they appeared to lose control over their models. This follows a similar cautious development plan recently published by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
