Flash Floods Hit 3 Northern Provinces as Interior Ministry Orders 24/7 Response

On July 30, Deputy Interior Minister J Thaiset announced that following weather warnings from the Thai Meteorological Department regarding heavy to very heavy rainfall, potential flash floods, and mudslides spanning from July 30 to August 2, he has instructed the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), provincial governors, and local administrative organizations to fully prepare for the situation, emphasizing that disaster response must outpace the disaster itself to minimize casualties and property damage.

Mr. J stated that he has urged high-risk provinces to collaborate with local administrative bodies, village heads, and kamnans to step up public warnings, closely monitor water levels in rivers, streams, and canals, and help residents move belongings to higher ground if water reaches critical levels. Local bodies have also been instructed to ready machinery and personnel for around-the-clock emergency assistance.

According to the DDPM's report at 6:00 PM, continuous heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across three provinces: Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Phayao. Officials have been deployed to assist residents, manage traffic, and drain accumulated water. No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.

• Chiang Rai: Flooding occurred across 7 sub-districts and 7 villages in Mae Chan and Mueang Chiang Rai districts. Water levels have receded and damage assessments are underway.
• Chiang Mai: Flooding affected 5 villages across 4 sub-districts in Mae Ai district, impacting 4 households. Water levels have dropped without any casualties.
• Phayao: Flooding hit 6 sub-districts and 6 villages in Mueang Phayao district—namely Ban Sang, Mae Sai, Ban Tun, San Pa Muang, Jam Pa Wai, and Ban Tom—affecting 86 households. Relief operations are ongoing as the situation subsides.

Mr. J added that although conditions are improving in some areas, heavy rains are still forecasted. He warned officials against complacency, calling for active disaster management plans, ready equipment, and special attention toward vulnerable groups such as the elderly and bedridden patients.

"The most important thing is preparedness and the fastest possible warning, because if we can respond faster than the disaster, losses can be significantly reduced. Every agency must work proactively, integrate all sectors, and reach the public swiftly."
