The boundaries of classical art are dissolving as ACCIONA Cultura teams up with Madrid’s Museo Nacional del Prado to launch a groundbreaking 30-minute free-roam virtual reality experience. Making its US debut at Brooklyn’s Powerhouse Arts through December 20, 2026, Masterpieces: A Virtual Experience of the Museo del Prado invites visitors to step directly inside famous canvases and explore them together in a fully navigable three-dimensional space.
Following international stops in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, and Shanghai, this latest iteration expands ACCIONA Cultura’s portfolio of immersive spatial environments. Curated by Alejandro Vergara, Head of Conservation of Flemish Painting and Northern Schools at the Prado, the installation draws on original archives to blend historical accuracy with innovative spatial design and immersive soundscapes, turning passive viewing into an intimate, shared sensory journey.
Integrating virtual reality into classical museum curation represents a strategic shift in how cultural institutions handle fragile and immovable masterpieces. By transforming physical paintings into interactive 3D spaces, museums can overcome geographical and preservation barriers while offering visitors a deeper, narrative-driven engagement that goes far beyond traditional static exhibitions.

The physical-digital installation at Powerhouse Arts acts as a live architectural laboratory, weaving five pivotal works that rarely travel outside Madrid into a continuous, fluid spatial narrative. The featured masterpieces include:
- The Sense of Sight by Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel
- Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez
- Venus and Adonis by Paolo Veronese
- Witches' Sabbath by Francisco de Goya
- The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch
Guided by the voice of a fictional security guard on his final night shift before retirement, visitors journey through an imaginary museum where classical paintings open into multi-user digital environments. This thoughtful exhibition design dissolves cold museum distance, allowing audiences to move through physical space together and engage in an intimate dialogue with the art.
"Dissolving cold museum distance to let the underlying stories breathe."
