The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested an employee at OpenAI after the artificial intelligence firm discovered that a secret recording device had been planted inside one of its executive conference rooms. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding internal security at leading AI laboratories.

Federal prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California identified the suspect as Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national. According to OpenAI spokesperson Nate Evans, Alfozan joined the AI model maker in July 2025 and worked on the product team before being fired and arrested on October 9, roughly a week after the surveillance device was found.

According to prosecutors, the recording device was discovered after being inserted into a USB port on the back of a television inside OpenAI’s San Francisco office. Investigators noted that OpenAI had installed a security camera that allegedly captured Alfozan looking behind the television where the device was concealed.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of insider threats within high-stakes technology companies. As artificial intelligence firms accumulate immense intellectual property, securing physical office spaces and executive meeting areas has become just as critical as digital cybersecurity measures to prevent corporate espionage and unauthorized surveillance.

Alfozan has been formally charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications, which involves covertly recording audio without permission. Neither the suspect nor his defense attorney could be immediately reached for comment, and he faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
