  • Deezer is developing a toggle switch to let users hide AI-generated music.
  • The filtering feature is expected to roll out before the end of the year.
  • CEO notes strong user demand for focusing exclusively on human creators.
  • AI tracks surged to over 50% of daily platform uploads by July.

Music streaming platform Deezer is taking a firm stance against the flood of artificial intelligence audio by developing a new feature that lets users completely filter out AI-generated content. The company announced on Tuesday that it is working on a toggle switch designed to keep AI tracks off listener feeds, with an expected launch before the end of the year.

When activated, the new toggle will prevent users from encountering AI-generated tracks, albums, and associated artists anywhere within their platform search results.

"We’ve seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music, and we are now giving everyone the option to remove this content completely from their streaming experience on Deezer, and focus only on human creators and creations, if they wish."

Alexis Lanternier, Deezer CEO

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier stated in a release that the massive surge of AI music uploaded to the service served as a primary catalyst for introducing the toggle. The streaming company pointed to a survey from the previous year indicating that roughly 45% of Deezer customers wanted a dedicated way to clear AI music out of their feeds.

Deezer integrated AI-detection tools last year and has continuously tracked platform uploads since. During the initial rollout of those tools, AI-generated tracks accounted for 10% of daily uploads. By July, the company reported that more than half of its daily uploads over 50% were AI-generated tracks, averaging around 90,000 tracks per day.

Deezer's move to introduce an AI filter highlights a growing industry challenge regarding platform congestion and copyright integrity. As generative tools make music creation frictionless, streaming services face mounting pressure to protect human artists' earnings and discoverability from an overwhelming volume of automated audio spam.

Other major music services have implemented varying policies to address AI audio. Bandcamp has instituted a total ban on AI tracks, while Tidal cut off monetization for accounts uploading AI-generated music. Spotify has taken a moderate approach by labeling AI tracks more prominently, and reports indicate Apple Music plans to introduce its own AI labeling system by the end of the year.
