On October 15, 2026, at Government House, government spokesman Ekkaphop Pianphet addressed the ongoing 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, held from October 12-18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, stating that the event has now reached its midpoint with high participant satisfaction.
The government spokesman revealed that Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, delivered engaging presentations on fiscal and financial matters. However, authorities observed deliberate attempts to spread negative news designed to discredit Thailand's hosting of the high-profile event.
Hosting the joint IMF and World Bank annual meetings is a monumental milestone for Thailand on the global stage. The intentional spread of misinformation not only undermines political stability but can also negatively warp international perceptions of the country's economic readiness. Critical media literacy remains essential to prevent public manipulation during major international summits.

Ekkaphop clarified reports from certain outlets claiming an IMF executive had reprimanded Thailand, affirming that the official actually discussed global challenges faced worldwide. On the contrary, the IMF praised Thailand for capturing advantages from artificial intelligence and operating within a region boasting high international trade potential. The government has already forwarded these false reports to the Public Relations Department's anti-fake news center.
Furthermore, criticisms arose regarding heavily edited clips of the Prime Minister's remarks at the CNN Global Perspectives: In Bangkok panel held in parallel with the main summit. Critics isolated a casual remark about local iced coffee while ignoring the broader strategic message regarding Thailand's global economic connectivity and financial leadership.
The spokesman emphasized that 35 years ago when the World Bank last met in Thailand, the nation was considered impoverished, whereas today it has achieved exponential growth. He encouraged citizens to take pride in the nation's progress regardless of their political alignment with the current administration.
Regarding planned protests and potential overnight gatherings around the venue on October 18, Ekkaphop noted that peaceful assembly is a legitimate right as long as it does not infringe upon others, suggesting open dialogue as the best resolution for grievances.
