  • Figma introduces Specs and code layers to better control AI agent workflows
  • Expands MCP support to over 20 new tools including Open Code and Sarvam
  • Integrates Payload CMS with Figma Make for dynamic website generation

Design platform Figma has rolled out several new features and capabilities aimed at defining how AI agents operate on its platform, steering them toward more predictable outcomes given the inherently non-deterministic nature of artificial intelligence. Among the key rollouts is a new feature called Figma Specs, which functions as a markdown editor allowing users to define their design language in a straightforward manner.

This documentation serves as a centralized reference for teams and agents alike during the design process in Figma. Specs can operate as a standalone file or exist directly within the canvas. In addition to text editing, users can reference other Figma elements on the canvas, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs, while also managing centralized context through design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines that establish rules for agents to follow.

Over the past week, the company has made its canvas-based agent available to a broader user base. Alongside this expansion, Figma is launching its code layers feature into public beta following a private beta phase that began in June. This feature introduces coding directly to designs on the canvas to build more interactive prototypes, enabling users to prompt the agent to convert a design into code or modify specific sections of the code to iterate rapidly on prototypes.

Furthermore, the company has added support for over 20 new tools through its Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Following its acquisition of open-source headless CMS Payload last year, Figma is now integrating the platform with its Figma Make product to generate dynamic websites and manage content directly, noting that Payload downloads have surged sixfold over the past 12 months.

Figma's focus on structured context and deterministic control mechanisms highlights a broader industry shift from experimental generative AI tools toward production-ready workflows. By bridging design specifications, code layers, and content management systems, the platform aims to minimize friction in collaborative product development environments.

Highlighting its international footprint, Figma opened its first office in India late last year to oversee sales, partnerships, go-to-market strategies, and product support. The company noted that India is its largest user market outside of the United States, with its platform currently utilized by 40% of India's top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
