- Tourism Ireland states its provided information shapes nearly one in five AI queries about Ireland.
- Research shows the share of travelers naming AI as their primary inspiration doubled over the past year.
- The agency combats repetitive AI recommendations by promoting smaller regional experiences and diverse web mentions.
As artificial intelligence transforms online discovery, tourism boards and destination management organizations worldwide are figuring out how to manage their messaging. For Tourism Ireland, this technological shift has led the agency to actively measure how frequently its content influences the answers provided by AI engines.
Speaking on Thursday at Skift's Transatlantic Summit in Dublin, Tourism Ireland CEO Alice Mansergh disclosed a rare industry metric: information supplied by the agency now shapes close to one in five AI-generated answers regarding Ireland as a destination. While most destination marketing organizations remain in the auditing phase—observing what tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini say about them—few have published concrete figures measuring their own impact on those AI responses.
Tourism Ireland's internal research revealed that the proportion of travelers citing AI as their primary source of trip inspiration doubled over the past year. In response, the agency optimized all digital content to ensure readability by generative AI models while closely tracking the outcomes.

Mansergh pointed out that left to its own devices, AI tends to repeat the exact same familiar recommendations continuously. To counter this, Tourism Ireland actively pushes smaller regional experiences—such as sheepdog demonstrations in Sligo or traditional boat building on the Aran Islands—aiming to spread visitors and spending more evenly across the entire island.
"Choose what you want to be famous for and build a bit of a surround sound of other voices repeating it."

Building a "surround sound" strategy for generative AI involves expanding a brand's footprint beyond its official domain into external ecosystems that LLMs rely on for training and retrieval, such as Reddit, YouTube, and TripAdvisor. Because AI search engines aggregate information across the web to synthesize trustworthy responses, cultivating corroborating mentions across active online communities helps ensure a destination is recommended more frequently and accurately by AI models.
Because these models also pull references from platforms like Reddit, YouTube, and TripAdvisor, Mansergh's core advice is to deliberately choose what a destination wants to be famous for and establish a chorus of other voices reinforcing that narrative. Furthermore, she cautioned against overusing generative technology, pointing out growing consumer aversion to low-quality automated content known as "AI slop."
