Long-serving Member of Parliament Diane Abbott has been welcomed back into the Labour Party following a year-long suspension. According to a party spokesperson, Abbott offered an apology through an independent process, enabling her to sit as a Labour MP once again.
Abbott was suspended in 2025 following an antisemitism row sparked by a social media post regarding the Israel Defense Forces days prior. Writing on X, Abbott stated that she had received a formal warning and expressed deep sorrow for using wording that conflated the actions of the state of Israel with the Jewish community.

The reinstatement of high-profile figures like Diane Abbott serves as a crucial political test for the Labour leadership, balancing party unity with strict expectations from Jewish community organizations such as the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council, who closely monitor the party's zero-tolerance approach toward antisemitism.
Alongside Abbott, Joani Reid, the MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, has also been readmitted to the party. Reid had voluntarily suspended herself in March after her husband, David Taylor, was arrested alongside two other men on suspicion of spying for China, with police bail extended through August.
Responding to her reinstatement on Thursday evening, Reid stated she was excited to play a full part in supporting the new prime minister. She emphasized that she was never part of the police investigation either as a suspect or a witness, expressing relief that this has now been recognized.
Prior to the decision, over 38,000 people signed a petition supporting Abbott's return, while Jewish groups expressed concerns following early reports in the Sun newspaper. Following these readmissions, two MPs—Karl Turner and Dan Norris—remain suspended from the parliamentary party over separate disciplinary and legal matters.
