Following the discontinuation of OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser project, the company is shifting its focus to upgrading the Google Chrome extension, introducing new capabilities that allow the AI assistant to utilize the browser tabs you currently have open.
With the extension installed, OpenAI states that ChatGPT can now view your browser tabs when you tag Chrome within the web or desktop app. The company showcased a demo video displaying a user asking ChatGPT to compare three open tabs featuring sofas they were considering for purchase.
This integration reflects OpenAI's strategic shift toward embedding AI directly into mainstream browsing workflows rather than standalone browser development. By pulling context directly from open tabs, the tool removes the friction of manually copying URLs or text, mirroring competitive features like Google Gemini's auto browse capabilities.
In addition, OpenAI has updated the sidebar version of ChatGPT with the full power of the AI and complete conversation history in Chat or Work, allowing users to leverage these tools without leaving the page they are currently viewing.
The upgrade also empowers ChatGPT Work to control your Chrome tabs for automated tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files, alongside organizing and grouping open tabs, matching functionalities similar to Google's Gemini-powered auto browse feature.
