- Eighteen-year-old Thomas Rew poised to be the youngest England Lions captain in history.
- To lead the side in three T20 matches against West Indies A in St Kitts and Nevis in November.
- Earned a developmental deal and his first senior call-up for the upcoming tour of Australia.
Teenager Thomas Rew is on course to make history as the youngest captain in the history of the England Lions, leading the squad in a three-match T20 series against West Indies A in St Kitts and Nevis this November. The milestone arrives in the same week the 18-year-old secured an England developmental contract and earned his maiden senior call-up for the T20 series in Australia.
Rew will skipper a touring squad that features his older brother, James. Thomas is one of three players alongside Hampshire seamer Eddie Jack and Sussex all-rounder James Coles who will participate in the Caribbean tour before traveling onward to Australia.

The T20 fixtures in the Caribbean will be followed by a five-match one-day series, with that squad captained by Test batter Dan Lawrence. Lawrence is joined in the one-day setup by seamer Sam Cook, as both senior players utilize the Lions tour to prepare for the senior team's three Test matches against South Africa in December.
Elevating an 18-year-old to the role of Lions captain highlights the England hierarchy's aggressive strategy in fast-tracking elite youth talent into leadership positions. Blending rising teenagers with established internationals seeking match fitness creates a high-performance environment designed to accelerate developmental milestones.
Rew's rapid ascension follows a stellar breakthrough period, having captained the England Under-19s to the World Cup final earlier this year before scoring his first two first-class hundreds for Somerset over the summer. Rew turns 19 on November 29, and should he feature on the senior tour of Australia, he would become the third-youngest man to debut for England across all formats after Rehan Ahmed and Brian Close, as well as the youngest Englishman to play against Australia.
Meanwhile, former England batter Jonathan Trott takes charge of the Lions' winter tours following the departure of former head coach Andrew Flintoff, overseeing the confirmed T20 and one-day squads as they prepare for the upcoming international fixtures.
