- About 22.4% of tracked AI Overview traffic was misattributed to Direct in GA4.
- The dataset covers 51,200 referral events from September 2025 through June 2026.
- URL text fragments from AI searches can cause analytics tools to misclassify visits.
- Businesses should combine multiple signals instead of relying on single channel reports.
The expansion of AI-driven search features has introduced new measurement challenges for digital marketers evaluating content performance. A nine-month first-party analysis of a transportation-industry brand, published by Alex Galinos via Search Engine Land, reveals that referral traffic driven by Google AI Overviews may not appear in the standard marketing channels teams expect.
The dataset tracked 51,200 AI Overview referral events across 1,661 cited snippets from September 2025 through June 2026. While these findings are specific to a single brand and should not serve as a universal benchmark, they highlight a growing measurement problem where AI-enabled browsing fails to preserve a clean, end-to-end attribution path.

Throughout the measurement window, AI Overviews accounted for 7.53% of organic sessions for the studied site. However, this overall figure masks sharp fluctuations, peaking at roughly 16% to 17% of organic sessions before dropping to between 2% and 4% in later periods.
This volatility underscores why businesses should avoid drawing broad conclusions from short reporting windows. A single month can make AI Overview referrals look like either a durable acquisition channel or a negligible traffic source depending on when the report is generated.
This discrepancy illustrates how web analytics platforms like GA4 were built for traditional user journeys rather than generative AI summaries. When AI models generate direct answers and append specific text fragments, standard attribution models struggle to categorize the incoming traffic accurately, leading teams to underestimate their actual AI visibility.
One contributing factor is the text-fragment pattern #:~:text= that Google often appends to AI Overview destination URLs. While this fragment directs users straight to relevant paragraph text, GA4 may classify the resulting visit as Direct, making an AI referral look like someone typed the URL directly.
"Trying to assign every sale or lead to one AI Overview click is likely to create false precision."
