Industrial teams frequently waste valuable time searching through lengthy standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment manuals, and technical documents just to find answers to simple yet critical questions. Addressing this operational bottleneck, a developer has submitted a project for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2 focusing on side hustle solutions.
The project introduces a Multimodal GenAI Assistant designed to make industrial knowledge accessible through a conversational interface. Users can submit queries using natural language and receive precise answers grounded strictly in approved industrial documentation, complete with source references for easy verification. The long-term roadmap includes supporting scanned documents, schematics, and equipment imagery.
The integration of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) in this project addresses a major limitation of generative AI: hallucination. By retrieving factual snippets from verified manuals before generating a response, the system ensures technical reliability and traceability, which is critical in industrial settings where inaccurate procedures can lead to safety hazards.

The business case centers on reducing information search times, enhancing document usability, and empowering teams with relevant knowledge precisely when needed. The system prioritizes answer traceability back to original source files and explicitly acknowledges when available documentation lacks sufficient evidence to answer a prompt.
Furthermore, industrial AI should not remain exclusive to enterprises capable of affording expensive proprietary software. Open innovation enables experimentation with open-weight models, pipeline customization, system auditing, and localized deployment tailored to strict privacy, cost, and infrastructure constraints.
Open-source tooling helps mitigate vendor lock-in, improves architectural flexibility, and paves the way for private deployments among organizations prohibited from transmitting confidential manuals to external cloud services. Additionally, it invites developers to contribute enhancements in document parsing, multilingual search retrieval, evaluation frameworks, and safety mechanisms.
The ultimate objective is to construct practical software capable of evolving through community feedback rather than remaining a closed prototype. Built-in templates further allow teams to rapidly answer frequently asked questions or store reusable snippets.
