Operating at this granular level fundamentally transforms what can be optimized during execution.

A major highlight of this approach is the ability to determine which operations collapse into a single kernel. By folding operations such as bias adds, activations, and AMAX reductions directly into epilogues, the system eliminates the need to write intermediate states back to memory, significantly boosting processing efficiency.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

NVIDIA's cuDNN Graph API is engineered to overcome traditional deep learning library bottlenecks by giving developers direct control over graph-level optimizations. This capability is crucial for large-scale model training and inference workloads where hardware utilization must be maximized. Kernel fusion drastically reduces redundant memory round-trips between global memory and compute units, which typically constitute major performance bottlenecks.

Furthermore, developers can manually select engines rather than relying solely on automated heuristics. By timing every candidate configuration, developers gain precise insights into performance trade-offs. Compilation overhead is also strategically mitigated by pushing it out of the hot path utilizing serialized plans, cross-shape kernel caches, and CUDA graph capture mechanisms.

Benchmarking against PyTorch revealed that instances of performance parity typically occurred because PyTorch itself delegates those underlying operations to cuDNN. This demonstrates exactly where the API delivers peak value: complex fusions lacking direct framework equivalents, shapes executed frequently enough to justify autotuning, and small kernels where startup and launch latencies dominate performance metrics.

Source: MarkTechPost

Meta introduces ZGateway as a stateless proxy tier for ZippyDB

Handles more than 1 billion operations per second

Carries about 40% of ZippyDB traffic, projected over 60%

Mitigates TLS connection exhaustion and prevents fleet reboot loops

Under direct access architecture, every ZippyDB client connected directly to every database host it required. A single client could touch tens of thousands of shards across hundreds of thousands of hosts, forcing both typical clients and database hosts to maintain tens of thousands of TLS connections. Each idle connection consumed memory, CPU, and file descriptors on both ends, while inbound connection counts scaled up with every new client cohort. Reconnection storms frequently caused system crashes driven by file descriptor exhaustion and out-of-memory (OOM) errors. In one notable incident, a routing bug forced every client to open a connection per shard, plunging the entire server fleet into a reboot loop. Client-side fixes proved impractical because hundreds of separate teams own the client fleet.

To address these scaling bottlenecks, Meta developed ZGateway, functioning as a stateless proxy tier positioned between ZippyDB clients and the ZServer database fleet. According to Meta, the system handles over 1 billion operations per second and currently carries approximately 40% of all ZippyDB traffic, with projections to exceed 60%, all while incurring only about 6% computational overhead for typical use cases.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

1B+Operations per second

40%Current ZippyDB traffic

6%Computational overhead

ZGateway runs as regional tiers discovered via ServiceRouter, Meta’s service mesh, deployed in two distinct flavors: a pure proxy and a read-through cache. The underlying engine utilizes Meta’s thick C++ ZippyDB client, making ZGateway effectively operate as a managed service running a ZippyDB client.

Deploying a stateless proxy tier in large-scale database infrastructures effectively abstracts connection management complexity. Instead of allowing millions of clients to hammer hundreds of thousands of database hosts directly—which exposes hardware resources to exhaustion risks—introducing an intermediary layer for connection pooling and request batching dramatically stabilizes distributed database fleets operating at Meta's massive scale.

Clients transmit requests over a sticky connection to a regional ZGateway host. The proxy then terminates TLS, authorizes against the use case's ACLs, applies per-tenant admission control and traffic shaping, resolves shard locations, checks local caches on caching tiers, batches the request alongside concurrent work destined for that shard, and forwards it to the appropriate replicas. Responses are demultiplexed and returned alongside per-use-case metrics, traces, and quota usage records. Throughout this workflow, TLS handling remains within the Thrift/ServiceRouter stack while replica selection stays inside the embedded client.

Source: MarkTechPost

Sakana AI proposes PC-ALM as a layer-local alternative to backpropagation.

Successfully resolves the fading credit signal issue in deep, narrow networks.

Demonstrated training capabilities on residual MLPs up to 1,000 layers deep on MNIST.

Provides an MIT-licensed JAX reference implementation available on GitHub.

Researchers at Sakana AI have developed a novel artificial intelligence training algorithm named PC-ALM, functioning as a layer-local training method designed to replace traditional backpropagation. This architecture addresses the inherent limitations of standard Predictive Coding (PC) methods, which traditionally suffer from credit signal degradation before reaching input layers in deep and narrow networks.

The foundational mechanism of Predictive Coding treats every hidden activation as an optimization variable, penalizing the squared mismatch between each layer's activation and predictions arriving from below. Consequently, inference operates as gradient descent on that specific energy landscape, while learning is driven by a Hebbian-like weight step. The challenge lies in supervision entering at the output and diffusing through sequential compromises, with Innocenti et al. demonstrating that this PC-BP gap peaks when width is smaller than depth.

The ability of PC-ALM to bridge the performance gap between Predictive Coding and backpropagation represents a critical milestone. Traditional backpropagation demands extensive backward information flow across the entire network, consuming considerable memory and limiting parallel hardware execution. Adopting a layer-local approach enables systems to train massive architectures independently across individual layers.

During inference, PC-ALM alternates between two local steps: a primal gradient step on the activations, and a dual step <math><msub><mi>λ</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo>←</mo><msub><mi>λ</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo>+</mo><mi>α</mi><msub><mi>r</mi><mi>i</mi></msub></math> that accumulates prediction errors for each respective layer. The research team interprets this composite structure as a proportional-integral (PI) controller per layer, where the prediction error serves as the proportional term and the multiplier acts as the integral term. Setting <math><mi>α</mi><mo>=</mo><mi>ρ</mi></math> yields the classical method of multipliers.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

77.75%PC-ALM test accuracy on Fashion-MNIST

1,000Maximum layer depth tested in residual MLPs

The research team swept residual MLPs with widths and depths ranging from 8 to 128 on Fashion-MNIST and MNIST datasets under a mean-field parameterization for 1 epoch. Furthermore, PC-ALM consistently outperformed standard PC across every evaluated benchmark, including ResNet-18 tested on CIFAR-10 and Tiny ImageNet.

Source: MarkTechPost

Both agent harnesses and frameworks implement this loop, differing primarily in the level of developer control and customization they provide. The underlying substrate connecting these layers is the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

MCP defines three server-side primitives: tools, resources, and prompts. The July 28, 2026 revision mandated Mcp-Method and Mcp-Name headers on HTTP requests, allowing gateways and rate limiters to route traffic without parsing payloads. Additionally, the legacy HTTP+SSE transport was deprecated with a 12-month migration window.

500MMonthly SDK downloads

1B+Total TypeScript and Python SDK downloads

Adoption metrics underscore this protocol's prevalence, with maintainers reporting nearly half a billion SDK downloads per month across Tier 1 packages.
